SIU Concludes Toronto Falling Death Investigation

Mississauga (4 June, 2012) --- Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is probing the circumstances surrounding the falling death of a man in Scarborough this afternoon.

The Toronto Police Service (TPS) reported the following to the SIU:
• At approximately 2: 18 p.m. on June 4, 2012, TPS attended a residence on Adanac Drive for a call for assistance; and
• As an officer opened the door for the 15th floor stairwell, a man went through the window and fell.

The SIU has assigned three investigators and two forensic investigators to probe the circumstances of this incident.  The identity of the deceased male is not known at this time and efforts are underway to identify him.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
