Mississauga (16 July, 2012) --- L'Unité des enquêtes spéciales (UES) de l'Ontario enquête sur les circonstances entourant les blessures par balle subies par un jeune homme de 17 ans ce matin.
Le Service de police régionale de Durham (SPRD) a avisé l'UES de ce qui suit :
• Vers 7 h 30, ce matin, des agents du SPRD ont répondu à un appel pour cambriolage au 1398 Kingston Road, à Pickering.
• Il y a eu une altercation entre l'homme et le SPRD;
• Plusieurs coups de feu ont été tirés par la police, et l'homme a subi au moins une blessure par balle;
• L’homme a été initialement conduit au Rouge Valley Health System pour y être traité, puis transféré à l'Hôpital Sunnybrook en raison de blessures mettant sa vie en danger.
L'UES a chargé cinq enquêteurs et deux enquêteurs spécialistes des sciences judiciaires d’enquêter sur les circonstances entourant cet incident.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must
- consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
- depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
- publicly report the results of its investigations
