SIU Investigates Motor Vehicle Collision on Hwy 401 near Lancaster

TORONTO (27 October, 2007) --- Two Investigators, a Collision Reconstructionist and a Forensic Identification Technician from the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) are investigating the circumstances surrounding a police pursuit and a personal injury motor vehicle collision on Hwy 401 near Lancaster.

The SIU was notified that at approximately 7:30 PM on Friday, October 26, 2007 an OPP officer was investigating a vehicle in a service centre on Highway 401 near Lancaster. The vehicle refused to stop. The officer returned to his vehicle and pursued the vehicle westbound onto the highway. Approximately 3 kilometers from the service centre the vehicle attempted to make a U turn and rolled over. The 24 year old male driver was treated at Cornwall Hospital for non life threatening injuries.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence  in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid
  • report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
