SIU Investigates Injury in Bracebridge

TORONTO (3 August, 2007) --- Four investigators from the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) are in Bracebridge today to investigate an incident that resulted in a man suffering a broken ankle.

On August 2, 2007, at approximately 11:30 p.m., the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a complaint of a group of people causing a disturbance in the area of Manitoba Street and Monck Road. OPP officers in two cruisers arrived at the scene. Moments later, a 26-year-old man came into contact with one of the cruisers. He suffered a broken ankle and is being treated at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto.

SIU investigators are probing the circumstances of how the injury occurred. The SIU is appealing for anyone who witnessed this incident to contact the Unit at 416-622-1935 or 1-800-787-8529 x1935.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
