Mississauga (10 June, 2009) --- The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has sent five investigators and two forensic investigators to Toronto to probe the circumstances of a motor vehicle collision involving a Toronto Police Service (TPS) police car today.

The Toronto Police Service (TPS) contacted the SIU at 10:50 a.m. May 16, 2009 to report that at 9:00 a.m. a TPS police car collided with a citizen's motor vehicle in the area of Dawes Road and Gower Street. The police officer, who was alone in car, was taken to the Trauma Unit at Sunnybrook Hospital. The female driver of the other vehicle, who was alone, was taken to Toronto East General Hospital. She was later transported to the Trauma Unit at Sunnybrook Hospital.

SIU investigators are appealing for anyone who witnessed this incident to contact the SIU at 416-622-0748.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
