Update to SIU Toronto Firearm Death Investigation

Mississauga (2 August, 2011) --- Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is continuing its investigation into the circumstances surrounding the firearm death of a man and the firearm injuries to a man and woman Saturday evening in Toronto.Kevin Murray, 30-years-old of Ajax, sustained a fatal gunshot injury while interacting with Toronto Police Service (TPS) officers. A post mortem was conducted on him in Toronto yesterday.Megan Martin, 21-years-old of Pickering, underwent surgery for a gunshot wound and is recovering in hospital.Amit Boodram, 18-years-old of Scarborough, was treated in hospital Saturday evening for a gunshot injury. He was released on Sunday.The SIU has designated two officers as subject officers.To date the SIU has conducted twenty-one witness interviews. The lead investigator is confident more witnesses will come forward and interviews will be conducted as required.The SIU is asking anyone who may have any information including still pictures, video or audio-video recordings relating to this case to contact the Unit at 416-622-1806 or 1-800-787-8529 extension #1806.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
