| What happens when an SIU investigation is concluded? |
The SIU is an independent civilian agency that has full powers and authority both to investigate and, where the evidence warrants, to charge officers with a criminal offence. Under Part VII, Section 113 of the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU has the sole authority to decide whether or not charges are warranted. The Director's decision is then reported to the Attorney General. The decision making on individual cases and in day-to-day operations is independent from any police service and from the government.
