Joseph Martino, LLB (Counsel)

Joseph Martino, LLB Joseph Martino graduated from the University of Toronto, Faculty of Law in 1998 and was called to the bar in Ontario in 1999.  Since then he has been legal counsel for the Special Investigations Unit. 

As counsel with the Unit, he provides legal, operational, policy and strategic advice in all areas relevant to the Unit’s mandate.  His work includes:

  • providing legal opinions to the Director on the criminal liability of officers under investigation;
  • legal research and writing on various aspects of policing and criminal law;
  • advising and assisting investigators in the investigative process;
  • oversight of the drafting of all legal instruments related to investigations (ie. search warrants, general warrants, DNA warrants, production orders, arrest warrants, etc);
  • liaising with other parties in the criminal justice system;
  • responding to requests for SIU files and information through the courts or the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act  
Mr. Martino is also active in the Unit’s outreach activities and is a regular lecturer on SIU-related issues at university and college criminology courses across the Greater Toronto Area.
