No Basis to Lay Charges in Relation to Arrest of Woman in London
Dans la soirée du 1er janvier 2019, une femme de 27 ans a endommagé les toilettes des hommes dans un restaurant de London, puis a pris la fuite. Des agents du Service de police de London se sont rendus sur les lieux. Peu après, un agent a repéré la femme à l’arrière d’une propriété de la rue St. George et l’a placée sous garde après une altercation physique au cours de laquelle l’agent a déchargé son arme à impulsions. Le directeur intérimaire de l’Unité des enquêtes spéciales, Joseph Martino, a conclu qu’il n’y avait aucun motif raisonnable de porter des accusations criminelles contre l’agent à l’égard d’une blessure au pied subie par la femme.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must
- consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
- depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
- publicly report the results of its investigations
