SIU Investigates Death in Toronto

Mississauga (28 December, 2011) --- Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is probing the circumstances surrounding the death of a male in Toronto this date.

On December 28, 2011, the Toronto Police Service (TPS) contacted the SIU and reported the following;
  • Sometime around 3:50 p.m. this date, TPS officers responded to the Rosedale Bridge over the Bloor viaduct to speak with a male.
  • While the officers were attempting to speak with the male, he fell from the bridge.
  • The male was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The SIU has assigned six investigators and two forensic investigators to probe the circumstances of this incident.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence  in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid
  • report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
