SIU Appeals for Witnesses to Fatal Vehicle Collision in Kenora

Mississauga (24 September, 2012) --- Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is seeking witnesses to events that led up to a fatal vehicle collision on Highway 17A and Redditt Road in Kenora in the early morning hours of September 23, 2012.
At approximately 2:00 a.m., Ontario Provincial Police officers were transporting a 42-year-old woman in custody to the Kenora detachment. At Highway 17A and Redditt Road, there was a collision between the marked cruiser and a tractor trailer. The woman died as a result of the collision.
To date, one subject officer and four witness officers have been designated. A post mortem will take place within the next couple of days.
During the course of the investigation, the SIU has learned that a person/people in a dark-colored pickup truck may have witnessed the incident, or events leading up to the incident. SIU investigators urge those individuals, or anyone else who may have information with respect to the collision to contact the Unit at 416-622-2293 or 1-800-787-8529 ext. 2293.
The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must
- consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
- depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid
- report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
