SIU Concludes Death Investigation in Port Hope

Mississauga (29 June, 2013) ---
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is probing the circumstances surrounding a fatal motor vehicle collision in Port Hope late last night. 

Preliminary information indicates the following: 
Shortly before midnight on Friday, June 28, 2013,  Port Hope Police Service officers attempted to stop a vehicle;
The vehicle did not stop and proceeded westbound on Lakeshore Road;
As the vehicle approached Shortt Street it left the roadway, struck a tree and rolled over;
The 30-year-old male driver of the vehicle was taken by ambulance to Northumberland Hills Hospital in Cobourg; and
He later succumbed to his injuries.

The SIU has assigned six investigators, three forensic investigators and a collision reconstructionist to probe the circumstances of this incident.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
