SIU Terminates Investigation into Arrest of Man in Brampton

The Director of the Special Investigations Unit, Tony Loparco, has terminated an investigation into an incident that occurred last month in Brampton.

At approximately 10:30 a.m. on June 22, 2018, a 26-year-old man was walking along a street in Brampton when he was arrested by Peel Regional Police Service officers for a number of criminal offences. While lodged in a cell at the police station, the man complained of pain to his ankle. He was taken to hospital for examination.

Director Loparco said, “The medical evidence indicates the man did not sustain a serious injury. Accordingly, I have terminated the investigation into this incident.”

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence  in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid
  • report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
