Case Number: 18-OCI-361

Mississauga, ON (20 December, 2018) ---
The province’s Special Investigations Unit is appealing for witnesses to an interaction that occurred on the weekend between York Regional Police (YRP) officers and a 44-year-old man.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • At approximately 10:15 a.m. on December 15, 2018, YRP officers responded to a residence on Claridge Drive, just off Pearson Avenue, for a report of a man with a gun.
  • Officers located the man and arrested him. He was taken to the police station and lodged in a cell.
  • Shortly after that, the man was transported to hospital for treatment of a serious injury.

Two investigators have been assigned to this incident. At this time, six witness officers and two subject officers have been designated.

The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529. The Unit is also urging anyone who may have any video evidence related to this incident to upload that video through the SIU website.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence  in connection with the incident under investigation
