SIU Terminates Peel Region Investigation
Case Number: 19-OCI-091
(17 May, 2019) ---
The Interim Director of the Special Investigations Unit, Joseph Martino, has terminated an investigation into a complaint that was brought forward to the Unit by a 21-year-old man on May 1, 2019.
On April 15, 2019, Peel Regional Police officers attended a Brampton home in the area of Bovaird Drive East and Main Street North after receiving a call. In the course of attempting to apprehend the man, there was an interaction. The man was transported to hospital for treatment. SIU investigators reached out to the man multiple times for a statement, but he refused to cooperate.
Interim Director Martino said, “In the absence of a statement from the complainant, there is an insufficient basis, in my view, from which to proceed with an investigation of this matter. Accordingly, this file is closed.”
The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must
- consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
- depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid
- report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
