No Basis to Lay Charges in Relation to Arrest of Youth in London

Mississauga, ON (3 October, 2019) ---
In the afternoon hours of October 23, 2018, London Police Service officers were called to a group home in relation to a 17-year-old male committing a weapons offence. During the course of his arrest, the youth suffered injuries. The Interim Director of the Special Investigations Unit, Joseph Martino, has determined there are no reasonable grounds to lay criminal charges against an officer in relation to the incident.

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or an allegation of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid
  • report the results of investigations to the Attorney General.
