SIU Appealing for Witnesses to Vaughan Arrest
No Basis to Lay Charges in Relation to Arrest of Man in Vaughan
Le 4 novembre 2018, juste après 21 h, des agents de la Police régionale de York ont intercepté un véhicule conduit par un homme dont le permis de conduire était suspendu et qui faisait l’objet de mandats d’arrestation. L’homme, âgé de 56 ans, est sorti du véhicule et peu après, une lutte s’est ensuivie entre lui et les agents. Le directeur intérimaire de l’Unité des enquêtes spéciales, Joseph Martino, a conclu qu’il n’y avait aucun motif raisonnable de porter des accusations criminelles à l’encontre d’un agent de police relativement à la fracture du nez qu’on a diagnostiqué à l’homme après son arrestation.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must
- consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
- depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
- publicly report the results of its investigations
