Update: Further Details Regarding SIU Death Investigation in Toronto

Mississauga, ON (18 April, 2020) ---
The province’s Special Investigations Unit is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of a 32-year-old man last night in Toronto.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • Shortly after 8 p.m. on April 17, 2020, Toronto Police Service officers were dispatched to an apartment building at 220 Victoria Street for an assault call.
  • Officers made their way to an apartment unit on the 12th floor and, from outside of the unit, attempted to communicate with the 32-year-old man who lived in the apartment.
  • Circumstances developed resulting in police contacting Toronto Fire Services (TFS).
  • Upon their arrival, TFS entered the apartment and saw flames and smoke. They located the man and brought him out.
  • The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

At this time, three investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case. The post-mortem will be conducted tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. in Toronto.

The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529. The Unit is also urging anyone who may have any video evidence related to this incident to upload that video through the SIU website.

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or an allegation of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid
  • report the results of investigations to the Attorney General.
