SIU Investigates Hamilton Vehicle Injury

Mississauga (4 August, 2005) --- The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is probing the circumstances surrounding an incident with a "pocket bike" on August 3, 2005 in Hamilton.

The SIU was notified that shortly before 8:45 p.m., an officer from the Hamilton Police Service (HPS) noticed the "pocket bike" being driven erratically in the area of Locke Street and Herkimer Street. The officer attempted to stop the 28-year-old male driver, but at the intersection of Bay Street South and Charlton Avenue West, the driver fell from the bike. He was taken to Hamilton General Hospital where he is being treated for serious facial injuries.

The SIU has assigned three investigators and three forensic identification technicians to investigate this incident. Investigators have designated one subject officer and three witness officers from the HPS.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence  in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid
  • report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
