SIU Investigates Collision in Burlington

Mississauga (10 June, 2009) --- Four investigators and three forensic identification investigators from the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) are probing the circumstances surrounding a collision in Burlington last evening.

The SIU was notified that at 7:54 p.m. May 21, 2009 an Ontario Provincial Police (OPP)officer from the Burlington Detachment was involved in a pursuit of an alleged stolen Cadillac SUV westbound on the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW). The vehicle exited the QEW at Guelph Line in Burlington. The vehicle went northbound and collided with a
Honda automobile in the intersection at Davidson Court.

Two people from the Cadillac and one person from the Honda were taken to the Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital for treatment.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence  in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid
  • report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
