SIU Investigates Incident in Schreiber OPP Area

TORONTO (23 January, 2009) --- The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is probing the circumstances surrounding a motor vehicle collision west of Schreiber early this morning.

At 5:55 a.m. today, the Ontario Provincial Police –Schreiber Detachment (OPP) contacted the SIU. The OPP reported that at 3:00 a.m. this morning, one of their officers stopped a vehicle on Hwy. 17 west of Schreiber. The male driver exited the vehicle, as did the OPP officer. The male then got back into his vehicle and fled eastbound on Highway 17. The OPP officer pursued the vehicle and eventually lost sight of it. The officer subsequently located the vehicle. It had left the roadway, entered a ditch and rolled over. The driver sustained injuries in the collision.

The male driver was taken to Schreiber Hospital and treated. He was then transferred to hospital in Thunder Bay for a further assessment. As a result of this further assessment, the SIU has invoked its mandate.

The SIU has assigned four investigators and two forensic investigators to probe the circumstances surrounding this incident.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence  in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid
  • report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
