SIU Continues to Investigate Toronto Firearm Death

Mississauga (28 December, 2009) --- The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is continuing its investigation into the circumstances surrounding a police shooting on Sunday December 27, 2009 involving the Toronto Police Service (TPS).

At this time the SIU has designated 4 subject officers, and has interviewed two witness officers and three civilian witnesses. The deceased is a 34-year-old Montreal-area man.

The SIU was notified that on the evening of December 27, 2009 at approximately 7:30 p.m., officers were called to investigate a person with a firearm in a parking lot at 1901 Eglinton Avenue East in Scarborough. During this investigation officers discharged their firearms and the male was struck at least once. The male was transported to Sunnybrook Hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence  in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid
  • report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
