SIU Investigates Fatal Police Shooting in Hamilton

Mississauga (4 February, 2011) --- Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is continuing to probe the circumstances surrounding the February 2, 2011, death of 19-year-old Andreas Chinnery.

The SIU investigation to date has determined that:

• Officers with the Hamilton Police Service (HPS) attended a disturbance call on Wednesday, February 2nd, 2011 at approximately 10:43 PM, to a residence on Barton Street East near Lottridge Street;

• During the interaction, Mr. Chinnery was struck by at least one shot fired by an HPS officer;

• Mr Chinnery was transported to Hamilton General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead;

• The SIU has designated one officer and two witness officers; and

• An autopsy will be conducted today in Hamilton.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
