Led by the Director, the SIU consists of approximately 90 staff members who bring with them a wide breadth of knowledge and experience in both investigative and administrative roles.
The SIU’s civilian investigators are central to the work of the Unit. In compliance with the Ontario Police Services Act and internal operating procedures, investigators conduct independent investigations into incidents under the SIU’s mandate. Fifteen Lead Investigators are stationed at the SIU’s headquarters in Mississauga and boast an extensive background in both investigation and investigative interviewing. Of these investigators, 80% have civilian backgrounds with investigative experience gained at agencies like the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, the Ontario Ministry of Labour, Canada Post, the Canadian Security Intelligence Service and the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario. In addition to the Lead Investigators, there are 31 As-Required Investigators based throughout the province who are called on to assist with investigations based on regional needs. All Investigators typically have a minimum of three to five years of investigative experience and once hired are provided with further technical and procedural training through in-house seminars, external courses, conference attendance and online courses. Ten Forensic Investigators compliment the investigative process by providing technical advice and assistance about the potential significance of physical evidence.
Administratively, the SIU is also supported by a Deputy Director, an Executive Officer, Manager - Business Operations, Manager - Affected Persons, Administrative Manager, Communications Coordinator, Outreach Coordinator, Training Coordinator, and administrative staff composed of executive support, transcribers, investigative records center coordinator, budget coordinator, systems analyst and administrative assistants.
