SIU Terminates Investigation into Man’s Fall From Hospital Parking Garage in Brantford

Numéro du dossier: 19-OCI-031

Mississauga, ON (13 mars 2019) ---
The Director of the Special Investigations Unit, Tony Loparco, has terminated an investigation into the falling injuries sustained by a 43-year-old man last month in Brantford.

On February 7, 2019, the man had been admitted to the Brantford General Hospital on a form 3 of the Mental Health Act (MHA). At approximately 2 p.m., hospital staff contacted the Brantford Police Service to inform that the man had left the hospital. Just minutes prior to this call, BPS had received a call from a civilian who said she saw a man on top of the hospital parking structure, and she said it appeared that he was prepared to jump from the parking garage. Upon seeing police arrive, the man ran to the opposite side of the parking garage and jumped, falling four storeys to the ground below.  The man was transported to hospital for treatment.

Director Loparco said, “It is apparent that the man was solely responsible for his injuries. There is no evidence to suggest that his reason for jumping from a parking structure or his injuries were caused by the acts or omissions of any police officer. As such, I have terminated the investigation into this incident.”
