SIU Investigating Police Deployment of ARWEN at Man in Cambridge

The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the deployment of an Anti-Riot Weapon EnField at a 57-year-old man yesterday in Cambridge.
Preliminary information suggests the following:
- At approximately 10:45 a.m. on April 25, 2025, Waterloo Regional Police Service officers responded to reports of a domestic incident at a Super 8 hotel in Cambridge. Officers had information that a male was armed with edged weapons.
- Around 11:30 a.m., Emergency Response Team officers became involved in an interaction with the male, and an ARWEN was deployed.
- The male was struck and subsequently arrested.
- The man was later transported to hospital. He did not suffer any serious injury.
Two investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to the case.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must
- consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
- depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
- publicly report the results of its investigations
