SIU Investigates Vehicle Injuries in Arthur Township

Mississauga (19 January, 2015) --- Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is probing the circumstances surrounding the injuries sustained by two individuals in Arthur Township yesterday.

Preliminary information indicates the following:

  • On Sunday, January 18, 2015, at approximately 2:30 p.m., The Ontario Provincial Police was notified that an individual had driven away from a Pioneer gas bar in Minto Township without paying for fuel;
  • Officers located the vehicle and attempted to pull it over. The driver did not stop;
  • A short time later, while traveling eastbound on Third Line, the vehicle left the road and rolled several times;
  • The 31-year-old driver suffered back injuries. His 18-year-old passenger, who was ejected from the vehicle, sustained serious internal injuries. Both remain at the Hamilton General Hospital for treatment.

The SIU has assigned five investigators, two forensic investigators and a collision reconstructionist to probe the circumstances of this incident.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
