SIU Called to Investigate Incident at Brampton Motel

Mississauga, ON (17 February, 2016) ---
The Director of the province’s Special Investigations Unit has terminated an investigation into an incident in which a woman suffered a back injury outside a Brampton motel.

A preliminary investigation found the following:
  • Just after midnight on January 28, 2016, Peel Regional Police officers attended a Motel 6 at 160 Steelwell Road in Brampton.  The officers were conducting an investigation.
  • Officers attempted to speak with individuals inside one of the rooms.
  • Shortly after, a woman was located at the rear of the motel.
  • The woman had suffered a back injury.  She was transported to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre for treatment.

Director Tony Loparco stated, “Despite invoking our mandate, I terminated this investigation when it became apparent that police officers had no involvement in the woman’s injuries or in her decision to leave the motel room via the window.”

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
