SIU Investigating Police-Involved Shooting of Man Near Thunder Bay

Mississauga, ON (26 December, 2024) ---
The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating after a 58-year-old man was shot and wounded by a Thunder Bay Police Service officer this afternoon near Thunder Bay.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • At approximately 2:18 p.m. on December 26, 2024, police received 911 calls from motorists with reports a man with a shotgun was walking on Highway 11/17 and Pebblestone Road, about 30 kilometres west of Thunder Bay.
  • Officers responded and located the man. The man discharged his firearm and struck a police cruiser. The officer was not struck by gunfire.
  • An officer shot the man. Paramedics were called and the man was taken to hospital where he is being treated for a serious injury.
  • No police officers were injured.
One subject official and one witness official have been designated at this time. Three investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
