SIU Investigating Man’s Fall from Gardiner Expressway in Toronto

Mississauga, ON (17 June, 2025) ---
The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating after a man was seriously injured in a fall from the Gardiner Expressway in Toronto while fleeing police around midnight last night.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • On June 16, 2025, after 11 p.m., police were called about a carjacking involving a Rolls Royce in the area of the Shops of Don Mills at 1090 Don Mills Road. The Rolls Royce and a BMW fled the scene.
  • A short time later, police initiated a roadblock in the area of the Gardiner and Spadina Avenue. The driver of the BMW stopped and fled on foot. He fell from the Gardiner to Lakeshore Road below. The man was arrested. EMS were called and transported the man to hospital where he is being treated for serious injuries.
Three investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to the case.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
