SIU Concludes Investigation into Collision Involving Police Cruiser in Brampton

Case Number: 25-OVI-122

Mississauga, ON (22 July, 2025) ---
The Special Investigations Unit found no reasonable grounds to believe a Peel Regional Police officer committed a criminal offence in connection with a collision in Brampton that resulted in the serious injury of a 43-year-old man. On March 27, 2025, the Mercedes the man was driving collided with the cruiser while the officer was en route to an emergency call.

With lights and sirens activated, the officer stopped at the intersection of Mississauga Road and Steeles Avenue West before proceeding through the red light. The driver of the Mercedes entered the intersection on a green light and struck the cruiser. Director Martino characterized the officer’s conduct as a momentary lapse of attention, which, as the case law makes clear, rarely attracts criminal liability.

All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
