SIU Concludes Investigation into Hamilton Vehicle Collision

Mississauga, ON (24 July, 2025) ---
The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating after the driver of a stolen vehicle fled Hamilton Police Service officers and collided with a taxi last night.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • At approximately 11:40 p.m. on July 23, 2025, Hamilton Police Service officers, in a marked cruiser, attempted to stop the driver on Aikman Avenue. 
  • A short time later, the fleeing vehicle was involved in a collision with a taxi on Sanford Avenue South. 
  • The driver of the fleeing vehicle, a 34-year-old man, was arrested and taken to hospital where he is being treated for a serious injury.
  • The driver of the taxi was not seriously injured.
Two investigators, two forensic investigators and one collision reconstructionist have been assigned to the case. One subject official and one witness official has been designated at this time.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
