SIU Investigating Death of Man in Toronto

Mississauga, ON (7 September, 2025) ---
The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a man today in Toronto.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • At approximately 5:41 p.m., the Toronto Police Service received a call in relation to a disturbance at a house in the area of Keele Street and Finch Avenue W in North York. 
  • Officers arrived and were involved in a physical altercation with a male resident of the home. A conducted energy weapon was discharged at the man. The man was handcuffed. The man went into medical distress. Paramedics were called and officers provided medical attention.
  • The man was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Four investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
