SIU Investigating After Man Shot by Peel Officer in Brampton

Mississauga, ON (17 October, 2025) ---
The Special Investigations Unit found no reasonable grounds to believe a Peel Regional Police officer committed a criminal offence in connection with the shooting of a 35-year-old man in Brampton. On June 25, 2025, two officers responded to an apartment suite, near Steeles Avenue West and Hurontario Street, for a call about a domestic disturbance when the man advanced towards officers with a knife before he was shot once in the abdomen. He was taken to hospital for treatment.

Director Joseph Martino found it apparent that the officer’s choice of defensive force, namely, a single gunshot, was reasonable. The officer approached the man in a non-threatening fashion, asking how he was doing. However, the situation escalated dramatically when the man immediately stood up, told the officers to leave the apartment, and armed himself with a knife. The officers drew their firearms and told the man to drop the knife. The man continued to advance when the officer discharged his firearm. Director Martino concluded that in the split seconds that the officer had available to protect himself from a knife attack, nothing less than a firearm had the immediate stopping power required of the moment.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
