SIU Investigating Death of Man in Waterloo

Mississauga, ON (28 November, 2025) ---
The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 19-year-old male today in Waterloo.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • At approximately 11:15 p.m. on Thursday, November 27, 2025, police received a call regarding an individual who was experiencing a mental health crisis. Waterloo Regional Police Service officers were dispatched to the residence located in the area of Erb Street and Fischer-Hallman Road. 
  • Officers entered the residence and apprehended the man under the Mental Health Act. Shortly after, he became vital signs absent.
  • Emergency responders performed first aid.
  • The man was transported to hospital where he was pronounced deceased today.

Two investigators and have been assigned to the case. The post-mortem is scheduled for tomorrow.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
