SIU Investigating Fatal Fall from Building Balcony in Toronto

Mississauga, ON (21 December, 2025) ---
The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 58-year-old woman this afternoon in Toronto.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • At approximately 1 p.m. on December 21, 2025, Toronto Police Service officers were dispatched to a hotel in the area of Colborne Street and Yonge Street after being notified that a person staying in the building was creating a disturbance.
  • Upon arriving in the building lobby, officers were told that the individual had returned to her unit. 
  • They made their way to the door of the unit.
  • A short time later, the officers were made aware that the woman had fallen from the balcony of the unit. She was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Three investigators have been assigned to the case.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
