SIU Investigating After Motorcyclist Crashed While Fleeing Police in Vaughan

Mississauga, ON (20 April, 2026) ---
The Special Investigations Unit is investigating after a 42-year-old man was hospitalized with serious injuries in a motorcycle crash while fleeing York Regional Police last night.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • At about 10 p.m., an officer responded to a 911 call about a disturbance on Purcell Crescent. 
  • The officer located a man on a motorcycle and activated the lights on his cruiser. The man fled on the motorcycle. A short time later, the man crashed the motorcycle. He was taken to a Toronto hospital with serious, non-life-threatening injuries.
Three investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case. One subject official has been designated at this time.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
