SIU Investigating Death of Woman at Oshawa Hospital

Mississauga, ON (24 April, 2026) ---
The Special Investigations Unit is investigating the circumstances in relation to the death of a 23-year-old woman in Oshawa last night.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • At approximately 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 23, Durham Regional Police were called about a woman in crisis in the area of Simcoe Street North and Winchester Road East. Officers apprehended her and took her to the Lakeridge Health Oshawa hospital. A short time later, the woman was released from the hospital. 
  • Security located the woman in the hospital’s parking garage and alerted officers. Officers attempted to locate the woman. She was found on the ground below. She was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced deceased.
Three investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to the case. The post-mortem is scheduled for tomorrow (Saturday, April 25).

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
