SIU Discontinues Investigation into Man’s Fall from Roof in Oakville

Case Number: 26-OCI-123

Mississauga, ON (5 June, 2026) ---
The Director of the Special Investigations Unit, Joseph Martino, has terminated an investigation into the serious injuries suffered by a 28-year-old man in March in Oakville.

In the late evening of March 17, 2026, the man had climbed to the roofs of units at the townhouse complexes located in the area of Dundas Street East and Postridge Drive. Halton Regional Police Service officers, responding to the area following calls to police from residents, were dealing with one of the 911 callers when their attention was drawn to a metallic noise coming from the south side of one of the buildings. The man had fallen attempting to descend from the roof of a unit. Officers located the man, limping, and took him into custody. He had suffered fractures to the spine and both feet in the fall.

Based on the SIU’s preliminary inquiries, Director Martino was satisfied that the investigation should be discontinued. As there was no evidence of any interaction between the officers on scene and the man before he fell, there was patently nothing to investigate as far as the potential criminal liability of any police officer was concerned in connection with the man’s injuries. He alone was responsible for his injuries. The file has been closed.

All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
