No Charges to Issue in Relation to Brampton Arrest

Mississauga, ON (14 September, 2026) ---
In the afternoon of May 31, 2026, Peel Regional Police officers were dispatched to a Brampton residence following calls to police about a male brandishing a knife. Officers confronted the person of interest on the roadway and ordered him at gunpoint to drop the knife and get down to the ground. The man dropped the knife, raised his hands and dropped to his knees, his back turned to the officers. The officers directed him several times to lay flat on the road. The man either did not understand the instruction or refused to comply. When the man subsequently lifted his shirt above the waist, an officer moved in quickly and kicked him in the back. The strike propelled the man forward onto his front, and he struck his face on the road and broke his nose in the process. He was arrested. On his assessment of the evidence, SIU Director Joseph Martino determined there were no reasonable grounds to believe that an officer committed a criminal offence in connection with the man’s arrest and injury.

All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
