SIU Investigating Death of Man in Guelph

Mississauga, ON (5 October, 2026) ---
The Director of the Special Investigations Unit, Joseph Martino, found no reasonable grounds to believe a Guelph Police Service officer committed a criminal offence in connection with the death of a 58-year-old man following a fall from height.  As the officers were attempting to apprehend the man at the time, the SIU was notified and investigated.

On June 7, 2026, officers were called to an apartment in the area of Willow Road and Edinburgh Road North in Guelph about a man screaming, breaking windows and throwing objects outside. The officers forced their way into the residence after they saw blood on the door. They forced their way into the doorway of the barricaded bedroom, and one officer discharged their conducted energy weapon without effect. The man was able to make it to the window, falling to the ground below.

All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
