SIU Concludes Investigation into Man Injured During Arrest in Toronto

Case Number: 26-TCI-311

Mississauga, ON (30 October, 2026) ---
The Director of the Special Investigations Unit, Joseph Martino, found no reasonable grounds to believe a Toronto Police Service officer committed a criminal offence in connection with the serious injury of a 48-year-old man.  On July 5, 2026, officers arrested the man for stealing an e-bike.

The officers pursued the man on the e-bike and ordered him to stop. He tried to evade the officers but was pushed on his right shoulder, causing him to lose control and crash into recycling bins near Borden Street and Cyril Lane.

Director Martino concluded that pushing someone off an e-bike while they travelled about 40 km/h came with risks, but he found it justified for public safety given the information police had about a firearm in the man’s possession, which the man reportedly used to threaten the owner of the e-bike.

No firearm was recovered but the man was found to be in possession of a hand drill and a crowbar. The man was transported from the scene to hospital where he was diagnosed with a broken nose, right wrist and left ankle.
