SIU Concludes Investigation into Sudbury Arrest

Case Number: 26-OCI-313

Mississauga, ON (3 November, 2026) ---
In the afternoon of July 7, 2026, Greater Sudbury Police Service officers were on bicycle patrol when they observed a 54-year-old man who was subject to an arrest warrant. Officers advised the man that he was under arrest and then pursued him as he began to run away. One of the officers caught up to the man and took him to the ground. The man fell onto his left side and placed his right arm up around his head. The officer delivered three quick punches to the upper right arm area before he took control of the man’s arms and handcuffed them behind the back. The man was transported to the station and then to hospital where he was diagnosed with a fractured right clavicle. On his assessment of the evidence, SIU Director Joseph Martino determined there were no reasonable grounds to believe that an officer committed a criminal offence in connection with the man’s arrest and injury.
