SIU Appeals for Witnesses to Incident near North Bay

Mississauga (7 September, 2012) --- The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is seeking witnesses to events that led up to a single vehicle collision on Highway 17 in the early morning hours of September 5, 2012. A 38-year-old man sustained injuries.
Around 5:00 a.m., officers with the West Nipissing Police Service located a vehicle traveling east on Highway 17 near Sturgeon Falls. They attempted to stop the male driver of the vehicle, but he did not stop. Sometime later, he drove off the roadway. He was taken to North Bay Regional Health Centre for treatment of a broken ankle.
Investigators are interested in speaking to anyone who may have witnessed a Mercury Sable sedan and police vehicles driving eastbound on Hwy 17 at approximately 5:00 a.m. Wednesday morning between North Bay and Sturgeon Falls. The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must
- consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
- depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid
- report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
