SIU Investigates Vehicle Death in Kenora

Mississauga (23 September, 2012) --- Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is probing the circumstances surrounding the death of a 42-year-old woman in Kenora in the early morning hours.  

The Ontario Provincial Police reported the following information to the SIU:
• On September 23, 2012, at approximately 2:00 a.m., officers were transporting a woman in custody to the Kenora detachment.
• At Highway 17A and Redditt Road, there was a collision between the marked cruiser and a tractor trailer.
• The woman died as a result of the collision; the officers and the driver of the tractor trailer did not sustain serious injuries.

Three investigators, two forensic investigators and one collision reconstructionist from the SIU are investigating this incident.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
