SIU Investigates Shooting in Toronto

Mississauga (13 December, 2013) ---

--- Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is probing the circumstances surrounding a police involved shooting at the subway station at Yonge Street and Queen St. Toronto, that occurred at approximately 8:00 p.m. today.

Preliminary information indicates the following:

  • Police were investigating a man on a subway car;
  • There was an interaction between the man and the police;
  • The man was subsequently taken to hospital with gunshot wounds and is in stable condition.

The SIU has assigned nine investigators and four forensic investigators to probe the circumstances of this incident.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence  in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid
  • report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
