SIU Appealing for Witnesses to Guelph Collision

Mississauga (24 March, 2014) --- Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is appealing for witnesses to a collision yesterday between a Guelph Police Service (GPS) cruiser and a civilian vehicle in Guelph. The collision resulted in a serious injury to a 30-year-old woman.
Preliminary information indicates the following:
• On Sunday March 23, 2014 at approximately 4:50 p.m., a GPS officer driving a marked cruiser travelling west bound on Clair Road West, was involved in a collision with a civilian vehicle.
• The civilian vehicle was exiting the Clairfield Commons plaza between the Starbucks Coffee and the Toronto Dominion Bank.
• The 30-year-old driver of the civilian vehicle was transported to Guelph General Hospital for treatment of a serious injury.
The SIU has assigned three investigators and one forensic investigator to probe the circumstances of this incident.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must
- consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
- depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
- publicly report the results of its investigations
