SIU Investigating Death of 58-year-old Man in Toronto

Mississauga, ON (9 February, 2016) ---
The province’s Special Investigations Unit is probing the circumstances surrounding the death of a 58-year-old man near Pleasant Avenue and Chelmsford Avenue in Toronto.

Preliminary information indicates the following: 
  • Around 6 a.m. this morning, Toronto Police responded to a call close to Pleasant Avenue and Chelmsford Avenue.
  • Shortly after officers arrived, a gunshot was fired.
  • A man was transported to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, where he was pronounced dead.  

Three investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to investigate this incident.  

The SIU has designated one subject officer and three witness officers.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence  in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid
  • report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
