SIU Investigates Collision in Vaughan

TORONTO (28 October, 2005) --- The Special Investigations Unit is investigating a collision that occurred on October 27, 2005, involving a York Regional Police Service (YRPS) officer.

At about 9:40 p.m., an YRPS officer was traveling southbound on Jane Street in a marked cruiser, responding to an injured party call. The officer was just south of Rutherford Road when he became involved in a collision with a Honda Civic. The 19-year-old female driver of the car suffered serious injuries and was taken to Sunnybrook and Women's College Health Sciences Centre where she is in serious condition.

Six SIU investigators, including two forensic identification technicians, are probing the circumstances surrounding the collision. The scene has been processed and interviews are continuing today. The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence  in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid
  • report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
