SIU Continues Investigation into Bolton Shooting

At 2:30 p.m. yesterday three members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) - Caledon detachment were called to Queen St. in Bolton in regards to a man acting in an erratic manner. The officers located the man in a plaza on Queen St. The man ran from the officers and after a brief foot-chase they caught up to him in the area of Leonard and Pearl. As the officers were interacting with the man an OPP officer discharged his pistol. The man received a single gunshot wound. He was taken to hospital where he was treated. His injuries are not life threatening.
The SIU has assigned five field investigators and two forensic identification technicians to probe the circumstances surrounding this occurrence. At present one OPP officer has been designated as a subject officer and three OPP officers have been designated as witness officers.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must
- consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
- depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
- publicly report the results of its investigations
